Oscillatory waves in inhomogeneous neural media.
In this Letter we show that an inhomogeneous input can induce wave propagation failure in an excitatory neural network due to the pinning of a stationary front or pulse solution. A subsequent reduction in the strength of the input can lead to a Hopf instability of the stationary solution resulting in breatherlike oscillatory waves.
متن کاملWaves spontaneously generated by heterogeneity in oscillatory media
Wave propagation is an important characteristic for pattern formation and pattern dynamics. To date, various waves in homogeneous media have been investigated extensively and have been understood to a great extent. However, the wave behaviors in heterogeneous media have been studied and understood much less. In this work, we investigate waves that are spontaneously generated in one-dimensional ...
متن کاملDoppler effect of nonlinear waves and superspirals in oscillatory media.
Nonlinear waves emitted from a moving source are studied. A meandering spiral in a reaction-diffusion medium provides an example in which waves originate from a source exhibiting a back-and-forth movement in a radial direction. The periodic motion of the source induces a Doppler effect that causes a modulation in wavelength and amplitude of the waves ("superspiral"). Using direct simulations as...
متن کاملGalactic Binaries as Sources of Gravitational Waves
I review the expected Galactic sources of gravitational waves, concentrating on the low-frequency domain and summarise the current observational and theoretical knowledge we have. A model for the Galactic population of close binaries, which is tested against the observations is used to predict the expected signal for the future space based gravitational wave detector LISA. With a simple model f...
متن کاملCataclysmic variables as sources of gravitational waves
General relativity predicts that binary systems of stars produce gravitational waves of significant intensity. Here we are particularly interested in the cataclysmic variable binaries (CVs). These systems emit low frequency gravitational waves, f < 10−3Hz. We present here a catalog of CVs and argue that part of them are capable of being detected by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA).
